Mama, what does honest mean?

Good morning and welcome back to Miz Judi’s Kitchen. I hope this finds all happy and healthy.

As I was sitting around today, I got to thinking that Josh, our oldest son, will be 34 on Wed. and then I thought, where in the world has the time gone?

It got me to thinking about when he was 4 years old, and he was nothing like his brother Mark (Red), and his cousin Tony. Those two got into everything, but Josh was always a little shy.

Shoofly Pie, Pastry for Single Crust Pie

You know, I’ve always heard of this, “Shoofly Pie,” but never knew what it was. I was going through a cookbook the other night and saw this. I was reading where this recipe is famous with the Pennsylvania Dutch. I also read where there is no firm evidence in how this pie got its name, but it was suggested the sweetness in the pie itself would cause the flies to become problems.

Thinking on this some, I came to the conclusion, if this indeed did have an influence in the naming of this dessert, then if I’d have come up with this recipe the name wouldn’t have been what it is today. It’d have simply been… “Shoodub Pie!”

I’d like to try this and was just wondering if anyone out there might give me a review on its taste. This would be for my benefit only, Dub really doesn’t care what they taste like, just tell him it’s a piece of pie!

Lasagna Gardening

Hello, and welcome back to Coverin’ the Bases! We hope everyone is fine, and the world’s treating you as good as can be expected. Thanks for dropping back in to see us today! You guys are great!

Alright, let’s talk about a subject I’d never heard of before, until the last couple of weeks. Again, I know a little about having a garden, and keeping it up, but good Lord, I literally had no idea the number of different kinds of gardening, that are out there. Deb calls me, and many times quite appropriately…a dinosaur!

Dub…I Think She’s Got Yellow Jaundice!

Well, hello and welcome back to Ridin’ Out the Recession, in Miz Judi’s Kitchen. Here in Florida today, you just couldn’t ask for any prettier weather! It’s absolutely beautiful, but we could stand us a little rain.

Sadly though, we’re in our dry season, and usually we don’t stand a real good chance until June, when our rainy season begins. We’ll catch a shower every once in a while, but last year was kinda’ an odd year rainfall wise. It started early, and continued on, but again that’s unusual!

This morning we’ll talk about a couple things, first our daughter Michelle and yellow jaundice, and the second, being our compost pile. Let’s go ahead and get started.

Progress of our raised bed garden

Good morning and welcome back to Miz Judi’s Kitchen. I hope this finds all happy and healthy.

As you all know, for the last two weeks we have been working in our garden, and also our raised bed garden. We’d never had a raised bed garden before.

Now, I do believe, I’m really going to enjoy the raised bed garden, because for one thing it’s not too far from the house. I’ll be able to walk out into the back yard and pick some peppers, tomatoes, eggplant, also onions, and be back inside before I could have walked to the big garden.

Frozen Cranberry Banana Salad, Maddie’s Fruit Smoothie

Going through my Mother, Ruthie’s, cookbook, I came across my sister’s, Sissy, youngest daughter’s, Maddie, Fruit Smoothie recipe she’d left for Mom and Dad.

Maddie according to her recipe was 11 years old and left this dated 3/26/06. Maddie’s now in 11th grade, and her older sister, Jaycee, is a freshman at, of all places…Auburn! This being hard for her Uncle Dub to swaller, as he’s a Florida Gator fan.

I’m still recovering from this act of family treason! With all the different colleges to go to across this great Country of ours, why, if she wasn’t going to attend Florida, did she have to choose another SEC school? SEC standing for South Eastern Conference, which means, she’s simply going to one of the Gator’s rivalry schools. Spite…pure spite! Luv ya’, Jaycee, just don’t bring no dern “War Eagle” paraphernalia around here…okay?

Help Us Out…Canning Butter & Pickled Okra

Good morning, and I hope all you guys are doing fine today! Welcome back once more to Coverin’ the Bases! Thank you for coming back by and visiting with us!
I’d like to start off this morning by asking for some help. I’ve got a few questions to throw at you and I’m sure you can help us out.

Help Us Out…Canning Butter & Pickled Okra:

First off, does anyone have a GOOD pickled okra recipe? I’ve tried a few of our friends pickled okra they’ve shared with us, but I gotta’ tell you…I wasn’t too impressed. I don’t think this was because of my being to “picky,” as once more…take a look at my picture. Honestly, I’m one of those guys that if you call it food…99% of the time, I call it, GOOD!

I don’t know the reasoning for it, but what I’ve tried I really didn’t care for. But, there’s one brand, and I can’t remember the name, that I really like. Don’t tell too many others if you wouldn’t mind because…it’s “store bought.”

Cuzin Danny

Good morning guys! Welcome back to Ridin’ Out the Recession in Miz Judi’s Kitchen! Why don’t you pull up a chair this morning and sit a while? We’re so glad you came by this morning!

I’d like to tell you guys about one of our family members today. This guy is my Mom’s brother’s son, and his name is Danny.
Danny’s Momma and Daddy, are two of the nicest people you’ll ever meet. Aunt Ann is about as sweet as you can get. And cook?
Whew! That lady knows she can work on a cook stove! I don’t care what she’s cooking…it’s good!

She’s from Georgia, has that “Southern drawl,” and is a throwback to yesteryear, when times were tough, but family, well, was indeed family! Aunt Ann is well read, very sharp, and just an absolutely great person.

Ruthie, and “Sissy’s” Cleaning Again!

Good morning to all, and welcome back once more…to Miz Judi’s Kitchen!

I hope this finds everyone happy and healthy!

As you all know it’s almost beach weather again. Dub’s Mother, sister, sister in law, and me used to go to the beach every summer. It was a trip for just us girls, to get away from the menfolk, and to do what we wanted to do, without having them in tow, and aggravating us. Sound familiar to anybody else out there?

We would go and stay a week at a time, and never having a set time to eat or anything else! We did whatever we wanted, how we wanted, when we wanted, and just had some really good times there.

Chicken Pilau and Sloppy Joes

I’m going to continue with another couple of recipes from my OLDER sister Louise’s church cookbook. Since I’m trying to keep Dub busy outside with his, I mean OUR spring cleaning.

I love putting these recipes up for you good people to share, because I know many of these people who’ve given these recipes, as once again, they’re all from my home. It brings back memories while I’m copying them down for you!

I hope you enjoy them!
