Canning Butter and our Raised Bed Garden

Good morning guys, and thanks for coming in again. We’d like to welcome you to Coverin’ the Bases! I hope this finds everyone well, and ready to start of what looks to be a beautiful day!

Canning Butter

Right off the bat this morning I’d like to address an issue that has come up, over the last couple of days. This is the topic of canning your own butter.

This is a topic that many say can’t be done safely, then again you have just as many saying it can be done safely, and I have to say that I fall on the yes, I believe it can be done safely side of the fence.

Get up, Papa!

As you all know, we’ve been talking to you about making some memories for your kids and grandkids.

Shelby is our only granddaughter, and she came to see us this past weekend. Ever sense she’s been big enough to go up the stairs, she has to go and wake her Papa. This makes no matter what time it is when she gets here.

Saturday, Shelby and Red got here around 11:00. She got out of the truck, and the first thing she asked is, “Where’s Papa?” I told her he’s still in bed! Mark (Red) looked at me and said, “No he’s not,” and I winked at him, and said, “Yes he is!” Red just shook his head!

Louise’s Church Cookbook, Dip and Chips, Hot Chili Cheese Dip

Today, let’s take a look at a couple dips, if you guys don’t mind. The good thing about this job is even if you do mind, we don’t find out until after the fact! LOL! Don’t you just love it?

These are taken once more from Deb’s older, ancient possibly being a better description, sister Louise’s Church Cookbook!

Louise used to have aspirations to run for political office, and actually told me at one point in her life, she had run for office! I couldn’t believe it and asked her, half jokingly that when she ran, did she get out and hit the campaign trail?

Uncle Vint, Aunt Jesse, and Lil’ Tommy

Rise and shine guys, it’s time for another Ridin’ Out the Recession! We’d like to welcome you back this morning and tell you once again…THANKS FOR COMING!

Deb and I’ve been really blessed in this endeavor by getting to know, and associate with so many good people! Once more…you guys are just great! We absolutely love doing this, and through your help, hopefully we’ve done someone, somewhere a little good.

What to talk about with you guys today…how about a little story? The “tale” this morning, is one I heard years ago, and I thought it to be hilarious! I hope you guys enjoy it too.

12 Pints of Butter Canned Today

Good morning, and welcome back to Coverin’ the Bases! We’re glad you guys stopped back in to see us!

I tell you what, since Deb and I, along with the help and support from the Canada Free Press, which they still do by the way, Hey Judi and Brian, this project has been a testimonial to us of the goodness in our friend’s and neighbor’s hearts!! This is how it is supposed to be, friends helping friends through thick and thin!

I was beginning to wonder if we as a people and as a Nation, or Nations, had lost these values. But all of you who come by and visit with us, share with us, laugh with us, as well as advise us through your own experiences, show that we as a people do care about others.

The Camp Pt. 2

Good morning, and welcome back to Ridin’ Out the Recession…in Miz Judi’s Kitchen! Thank you all for stopping back in and visiting with us once again

This morning I’m going to share a few more memories of my Granddaddy and me at “the camp.

The Camp Pt. 2:

One thing that sticks out vividly about the camp is night falling and going to bed. I started going down there with Granddaddy when I was around 3 years old, and by the time I was 5 or 6, I was down there every chance I got, until I started school.

Growing up and Gardens

Good morning and welcome back to Miz Judi’s Kitchen. I hope this finds all happy and healthy.

We are finally getting some much needed rain! Thank you God! Have you ever noticed that when you really need something, he always provides it? We were so dry, and watering the garden with a hose, just doesn’t make it shoot up like a good rain.

This morning it looks like the plants have grown about 2 inches. After the rain they are really looking good. I told you the other day we had some bell peppers popping out, and now we have a few little tomatoes and some banana peppers. I do believe that maybe by next week or even possibly the end of this week, I will pick my first peppers, and I can’t wait.

Aunt Ann’s Pickled Squash and Pickled Okra

A couple columns back I was asking for help with a recipe for pickled okra. I had mentioned that the recipes in the past I’d run across, or the pickled okra I’d gotten from friends (I’m not so sure looking back now, by the way their dern “gift” of pickled okra tasted), just never “did it” for me.

The only pickled okra I found that I “really” liked was store bought, and though the brand I still feel today is very good, I just couldn’t help but wondering why couldn’t I find a really good recipe we could do at home?

Do We Have any Beekeepers as Readers?

Good morning guys and welcome to Coverin’ the Bases!

Rain…lots of it today, so let’s take a few minutes and talk about…rain! It started early this morning, and has rained off and on, mostly on, all day. It’s continued up into the night, its 8:00 pm here now, and we’re getting a good shower as we speak.

It’s been exactly the kind of rain we needed, too. Long slow drizzles, broken up from time to time by heavy downpours, then back to drizzling once again. No rain has started standing or running off, all steady being soaked up by the ground! Absolutely perfect!

The Camp

Good morning! How are you good people this morning? We sure hope all are well, and welcome back to Ridin’ Out the Recession…in Miz Judi’s Kitchen.

You know, we love talk about memories, especially childhood memories, and this morning I’d like to talk with you about a very special man in my life. He loved me to death, and showed it every time he was around.

He taught me many things in life, one of which was a work ethic, and another was simply to laugh. He let me get away with things, I probably couldn’t get away with any place else, but around him it just seemed to be okay. Now I could push little things to the limit, but when I did, he didn’t need to raise his voice, but just look at me. When the smile came off his face, and he looked at you when he’d had enough, or you were just doing wrong, you knew. That’s all it took.
