Down time, down at the ranch

I would like to welcome you all back to Miz Judi’s Kitchen. I hope this finds everyone happy and healthy.

As you know Dub, and I went down to his parent’s ranch. We had great time, and got some much needed down time, and it was wonderful just to enjoy all of God’s great outdoors.

Well, I see Dub has done told a big whopper yesterday, about the old man and his bear! When I read it, I thought o.k., I’ll tell a little story on ole Dub.

The Chicken Farm

Deb and I rode up to the chicken farm this past Friday, and you know, we really enjoyed stopping in there.

We stopped in at the complex and saw a few people we’d really not seen in years. We enjoyed seeing them, and the amazing part to me was once again…how time does fly! It had been since October of 1995, when Dad sold the complex to Hillandale Farms, since I personally, had set foot in that building.

Since then, the complex has been sold once more…this time to Cal-Maine Foods, a very, very, very large company, and from what I’d heard, and from what little I saw the other day, they are a well-run group! I was impressed.

Butterfinger Cookies, Rave Reviews Cake

These two sound pretty dern good to me, but I have to tell you guys, that Deb and I have cut our sugar consumption down to next to nothing. Sad but true.

We’ve just gotten back in, and I was looking through our daughter in law, Shelly Mae’s personal cookbook and ran across these two recipes.

Had A Ball At The Ranch

Happy Sunday and good to be able to visit with you guys once again. We hope everybody is doing just fine and thanks for stopping in to see us again!

You know Deb and I had gone down to the ranch for a couple days, and boy we had a good time! We’d been trying to leave Wed. morning, and it just seemed as if things wouldn’t stop popping up and delaying the trip.

Thursday morning rolled around and dad-gum, we were still having kinks thrown our way. Finally about 3:30, that afternoon, Deb says, “If we’re going, then let’s load the dern truck and GO!” So, being the loving husband I am, I says, “Okay.”

Mother’s Day Memories Once Again, and Headed To the Ranch!

I would like to welcome you all back to Miz Judi’s Kitchen. I hope this finds everyone happy and healthy.

I hope everyone had a very happy Mother Day, and as for me, I had a great one.

We went to Dub’s Mom and all of the grandkids were there. The way our kids are spread out it’s hard to get them all together at one time, but on this Sunday we had all 7 of our grandchildren there.

Going to Take a Day or Two Off

Good morning guys! How the heck are you today?

Well, Deb and I are headed down to the ranch and going to “charge our batteries!” If you good people were around ole Deb as much as I am…you’d need to recharge your batteries as well! Talking about a handful, shoot, I must be much tougher than I thought I was, just in regards to putting up with her ole aggravatin’ self.

Now I’m headed off into the woods with her for a couple days?? I have learned though, of a “secret weapon,” though if I’m gonna use it, I’ve got to be awful fast. Once she starts to open the door down there, I’m gonna jump her and put duct tape over her mouth!

Peace and quiet, yessir, that’s what I’ll be havin’ for the next couple days, just peace and quiet! I haven’t figured out just yet what I’m going to do, once I give that stuff a quick yank when I snatch it off of her, but…I’ll cross that bridge when I get to it.

A Peek In On the Garden

Well my friends, the garden is just beginning to get right! Deb went out this morning for a little while, and came back up with some squash, cucumbers and tomatoes. She’d picked some more peppers yesterday, and those guys have been coming in pretty regular for the last couple of weeks.

The squash, cucumbers, and tomatoes are just fixing to really start bearing. I took a whipping this year in terms of our tomatoes with the Fusarium wilt, as I’ve been sharing with you. I was in the raised beds yesterday, and dad-gum if I don’t believe it is going to get in every one of those tomato plants before it’s over!

This is really a shame because those plants have been doing so well growing off, and had just began bearing heavily when it first started showing up. We have two that it has killed, and we have about 4 more that it’s hitting pretty hard, but there’s another 4-5 that are just beginning to show symptoms of it. We had 16 total in those beds.

Foot Rot in Cattle

As you see from my last couple of stories, I’d been talking about a cow we had with foot rot, and our three ring circus atmosphere we created in catching her up to treat her, as we were all rookies to the cattle business . I thought you all might like to know what foot rot actually is, so this morning we’ll talk about this for a little while.

Foot rot, Fusobacterium necrophorum and Bacteroides melingenicus are the most common bacteria in foot rot, although now there is a feeling that another bacterial organism that could play a role in this disease as well. This is Porphromonas levii.

“Don’t Worry Boys…She’s Got Foot Rot!” Part Two

We were just easing off into those dern palmettos with Dad a hollering, “Bring her on boys, I’m fixing to rope her!”

We bailed on in them, and went to stomping around and hollering as loud as we could, hoping all the time she wasn’t going to turn and come back out our way. Every ounce of our will power was just a shoving her out towards Dad.
