The Garden’s Gone, But the Cows Sure Were Happy!

Good morning, and I hope all are well today! How about Father’s Day? Did you guys have a good one? Ours was great!

Well, our spring garden has done come and sprung! Honestly I can’t say that I’m very sad right at the moment, and I know Deb’s ready for a break. We have, picked, shelled, cooked for meals, and canned for later on down the road.

We’ve really had a dry spring this year, but all in all, the garden did excellent. It has supplied us, and our family with some really good eating, and we’ve put up enough that we should be able to eat butter beans, string beans, corn, and canned tomatoes, pickles, etc., probably until next year’s spring garden.

Bill Neal’s Fried Grits, Ronni’s Fried Apples, Blackberry Dumplings

I don’t know about the rest of you, but Deb and I from time to time enjoy a good breakfast…for supper.

I know down South many, many of us do this, and growing up Mom would do this for us maybe every couple of weeks or so. We loved it, and honestly we still do. In baseball terminology, it’s kinda like getting a “change-up.”

It’s mighty hard top beat a good supper of fried eggs, grits, smoked sausage links, patties, or bacon, a pan of biscuits, and a couple fresh, sliced tomatoes, and some fried apples. You really want to eat high on the hog, you did a pan of sausage gravy. When Deb does that, the gravy goes over everything on my plate…bar none! I could eat a number one wash tub full of it, or bust a gut trying!

Happy Father’s Day…

Good morning, and how are you all today? I want to wish everyone a Happy Father’s Day as well!

Can you guys believe how fast Father’s Day has gotten here once again? I swear it seems like it was just a couple months back. My Dad used to tell me, “Son, whatever you do don’t get old.” The problem I have is, he never told me how not to!

We went by to see my Dad and Mom this morning. Deb and I will probably go up again Sunday, but we aren’t 100% sure yet. With everything that goes on normally in our lives, then Deb’s little problem she’s encountered health wise, our lives scheduling wise, have been disrupted some, to say the least. But, what’s the old saying, “That’s life, huh?”

A Little About Deb, and How We Do Shishkabob

Hello again, and welcome back to Ridin’ Out The Recession, in Miz judi’s Kitchen. I guess I should welcome you guys this way every morning, but dern if that ain’t a mouthful! So 99% of the time it’s just hello!

Anyway, we hope everyone is fine and dandy today, and all your family as well.

Well, Deb didn’t get her first chemo treatment Wed. as planned. She will go next Thursday. She told me that mentally she was a little uneasy with starting it Wed., so I told her do what her heart says to do, and I’m sure that’s what she’s done.

Picking Corn, I Didn’t Think Was There

You know, I was just talking to you guys about pulling up the corn, getting off what we could salvage, and then feed the stalks and cleaned ears to the cows.

We went out yesterday morning to do just that. Then we got to looking at the ears, and started picking them. Well, once we got through we had considerably more than I would ever have guessed.

The cows did get to eat some today, but not what they would have liked to, or what I’d have liked to have given them. By the time we finished picking, we only had time to pull up about ¼ of what we’d planned to give them.

The Corn is Gone, and a Few Smiles in Regards to the Economy…Believe That?

Well, today we’ll be picking the last of our corn. Once it’s picked, we’ll cream it like we’ve been doing. I’m telling you I don’t know if there’s anything Deb likes better than creamed corn…’cept me maybe!!

After we pick it, we’ll pull it up and take it to the cows. It is so dern dry around here the grass looks as if it’s had a hard frost on it. Seriously, it looks that bad. We’re awful dry, especially for this time of the year.

Matter of fact it’s been so dry around here lately, the trees are bribing the dogs! June starts our rainy season, but for some reason we’re just not getting any rainfall.

Cream Cheese Bars, Chicken and Rice Casserole, Brunch Casserole

All you guys know that Deb has an older sister, Louise. Deb asks that I never fail in mentioning the fact, that Louise is…older!

Being the “old broken down” husband that I is, I in fact know that when Deb specifically asks me something, I have learned to just see that what she asks, I do.

Sadly I’ve become what I always said would never, ever, happen to me. I’ve become…a “yes man.” Only when it comes to her though, anybody else that just ain’t the case.

The Good Sport

Good morning, guys. How is everyone today? We sure hope all is well in regards to you and your families, and thank you for stopping back in to see Deb and me! You guys are great!

Anyway, last night I was sittin’ out in the swing just taking a few minutes of quiet time. The days have been blistering hot, and we sure could stand some rain, but last night it had cooled off and we had a nice breeze going.

It rained about 5 miles down the road, but although we didn’t get any of it, it was close enough that at least it cooled us down some. It was really, really nice.

Deb’s Port Is In, and Bonnie’s Creasy Greens

Good morning to all, and we hope everyone is doing just great! Thanks for stopping back by to see us this morning.

Well, first off we took Deb yesterday and had her port put in to start chemo treatment next Wed., the 15th. She’s doing absolutely fine, and ready to start “kickin some butt!” She’s got the Doctor speaking in her terms now too, as the last thing he told her this past Monday was… “Let’s start kickin some butt!”

Deb just kinda rubs off on you if you’re around her much at all.

Frank Pressley’s Poke and Eggs

Once more these two recipes come from the book, “Smokehouse Ham, Spoon Bread, and Scuppernong Wine.” I keep praising this book, and I have to tell you all once more…I really believe you will really enjoy this book. It is very entertaining, and hard to put down!

This recipe is for Bonnie, and is actually from a man in North Carolina, too. The man’s name is Frank Pressley and is from Cullowhee, N.C. He says he likes to cook up a mess of poke and eggs every spring to remind him of his childhood days in the mountains. P. 274
