Deb’s Update, and a Blessing:

Good morning and we hope this finds all well.

As you know, Deb decided on a second opinion, and boy, we’re all sure glad she did!

First off, no surgery, and since we had an appointment with her new Doctor Monday afternoon this was stressed once more…no surgery.
Upon leaving his office yesterday, we left with our game plan in hand. I have to tell you guys that after we had gotten back home, I literally could see that she obviously was relieved just from now, finally knowing the direction we are headed. Plus, we are finally fixing to settle in once more to some sort of schedule in our lives.

This is What WE Call Cream Corn… “City Boy!”

Hey guys! Man, what a beautiful morning here today! It’s hot and dry, but the days have been beautiful. There’s been a pretty good breeze late in the evenings lately, and it makes sitting out on the porch very comfortable the last couple hours before dark.

It’s breezy enough the dern skeeters don’t tote you off, but after dark you don’t want to go outside unless you’re prepared for em! Anyway…

A couple days ago I was telling you that Deb and I had FINALLY gotten caught up some in regards to our garden! Phew!

Race…and His Go-Cart

You know, Dale brought his grandson Race, to the house with him the other day. That little guy is cute as a button and just keeps a little grin on his face. Race is 5 years old.

We’d met Race once before, but I really didn’t have time to visit with him on that occasion, so I’m glad Dale brought him back by to see us.

Race loves to hunt, fish, camp, and do just about any “boy thing” there is to do. He is the apple of Dale’s eye, and I gotta tell you, I believe little Race kinda thinks highly of his granddaddy Dale too!

Shelby Lynn, and Her Nanna…in the Garden

Now you all know little Shelby Lynn. Shelby is our son Red’s daughter, and is 4 years old. Boy this little girl loves her Nana! The sun rises and sets in Deb’s rear-end as far as Shelby Lynn is concerned!

I’ve never seen a young’un that loves to clean like Shelby does. I swear, it’s amazing. Not just clean, but help out in any way she can.

She always sweeps the kitchen and living room for Deb, and it’s every time she comes! No joke. She absolutely just loves to do it.

The Last of Our String Beans, and Canning Limas:

Good morning, and how are you all today? We hope all is well for each and every one of you, and welcome back!

First off this morning, it was brought to my attention by a reader of our column about bread and butter pickles. I had listed 5 cups of sugar twice. This was in the ingredients section of the recipe. This was an error on my part…you only use 5 cups, sorry for any confusion.

I guess you could use ten cups of sugar, but I imagine that they’d have to be called…”Really SWEET Bread and Butter Pickles!” LOL!

The Last of Our String Beans, and Canning Limas:

Well, ole’ Deb and I had contemplated going back to the ranch this week, as her next appointment is this coming Monday. At this time we should find out the type of treatment she’ll be given.

Sausage With Apples, Bean Cake

I’d mentioned earlier that I’d purchased a book last week called “Smokehouse Ham, Spoon Bread, and Scuppernong Wine.” It’s about Appalachian cooking, and lore.

I’m really, really enjoying this book. It has a little of everything in it. I got a kick of one old man talking about a neighbor of his had been out admiring his cornfield.

The neighbor stated how good the man’s cornfield looked this year, and how much did he expect to produce from it this year, per acre?
The man looked at him and replied, “Oh, I reckon bout a hundred gallons!”

Canning Sweet Breads…Again!

Good morning everyone! How are you guys this fine morning?

You know, Deb and I don’t know very many of our friends who don’t like a good piece of cake every once in a while! This goes for Deb too, but personally, I couldn’t give a flip one way or the other. I know you guys believe that, huh?

Well, let’s set up a little scenario or two here for you this morning.

Bread & Butter Pickles, Squash Pickles, and Puttin’ Up More ‘Maters

Good morning and I hope this finds all of you doing just great.

Well, ole’ Deb and I have had a busy today, and looks as if we might be busy again tomorrow, too. Our garden is really putting out the produce now, and our canner is running pretty hard.

First though, I have to give Deb a hand this morning for such a fine supper last night. I was piddling around out in the garden when she hollered, “It’s ready!” At my age anymore, many things don’t get me too excited, but those two words still do, and it looks as if they always will!

A Couple Recipes for Mountain Gal, and Her…RAMPS

I’m going to share with you guys today a couple of recipes. These recipes are for one of our friends from North Carolina way. She’s very active in her comments on articles we discuss, and is a very, very knowledgeable in regards to gardening, canning, cooking, and I have come to believe…most anything in general! If you’ve been reading this site for very long you’ll recognize her as Bonnie!

Well, Bonnie kept sending me little teasers about a wild growin’ veggie, and she kept referring to it as “ramps.” I’m sure many out there are aware of what these are, but I gotta’ admit that I had no idea what a dern “ramp” was.

Not wanting to sound like a complete idiot, although Deb kept assuring me that most of you already knew in fact that yes, I am an idiot, I finally asked Bonnie, “What is a dern ramp?”

Some Pointers in Regards to Our Garden…From You

I’d like to toss something out to our good friend Kunoichi. If you remember, you were commenting not too far back that you used to mow the grass in a field, or lot, across from where you lived.

You stated, well actually you said:

Years ago, after moving back to my home town and thinking it would finally be our last move (we’ve moved 5 times since then), I had lots of space and started up a new garden. The property was made up of a couple of lots, with one of them empty and basically left to its own until someone came by in the fall and hayed it (did I mention we lived in the middle of “town?” *L*). It was filled with various grasses (including lots and lots of crab grass. :-p), some alfalfa, yarrow, vetch and a few other things I didn’t know the names of. While we lived there, I did keep it mowed, but most of the time it was just a small field.
