Ruthie’s Honey Hole!

I know a lady who would rather fish than just about anything else. Diggin’ worms and putting em on a hook, no matter. Using shiners, chicken livers, gizzards, or anything else for that matter, she don’t care. Put any of this down in front of her, and boom, they’re on her hook and in the water!

You can’t get up too early in the morning for her, it can’t get too hot in the middle of the day that she wants to go in and take a break, and you can’t keep her out fishing too late either! She absolutely loves to catch a fish. Big ones, or little ones, to her they’re all the same…a fish!

To everyone who knows her…she’s simply known as Ruthie, and all that do know her, love her, bar none! This includes her oldest son, who by the way calls her Ruthie about three quarters of the time, too!

Ruthie, is my Mama, but again, most times… just Ruthie!

The Island

There was an island out in the lake that I mentioned in Ruthie’s Honey Hole, that many, many years back someone had built a road out to. The name for the island…The island! The old road bed is still there, and the island has a big, beautiful oak hammock on it.

The property next door was owned by another family, and they owned about half the island, while Dad owned the other half. He has about 300 acres of orange grove on his property as well.

He ended up buying the adjoining property, which included the island and I believe another 60 acres. Once getting this property, he went in and cleaned up the old island and lifted up the branches on the old oak trees, and man, is it pretty today.

Since getting the whole island they’ve really cleaned it up. There was an old butcher shop there and just all kinds of junk. Now it’s just the big ole oaks and cabbage palms.

Lake Charles Dip, Camp Stew

Well, since we talked about Ruthie’s lake today, how bout we start off with a dip, called Lake Charles Dip. I was gonna rename it Lake Ruthie Dip, but thought better of it!
The second recipe is called Camp Stew, and since we talked about the ole island today, I figured a “Camp Stew” recipe would be appropriate as well!

Both came from Shelly Mae’s Church Cookbook. We hope you enjoy both!

Invasive Species:

Good morning guys, and how are you all today? We’d like to thank you for droppin’ in this morning, and we hope everyone is doing fine.
This morning I’d like to talk some on invasive species. If you look at our comment section, you can see Kunoichi and Bonnie were having a discussion on this topic.

I have no idea how they inspired me to look into such a topic, as both have more knowledge in their “little toes” than I do in my entire body. But, so life goes! Plus Dub usually has to throw his “two-cents” in the pot, mainly just to say I have! LOL!!

Actually they both “tweaked my interest,” so I just had to look into it a little. A little being a very good description of my capacity to absorb knowledge.

Progress of Our Starter Hive

Good morning again. Thank you all for coming back to visit with us in another segment of Ridin’ Out the Recession.

Thank you for the love and concern you have all showed in regards to my wife, and best friend Deb! It is so appreciated, and the concern you show at times overwhelms us! Thank you all so very, very much. We will whip this thing!

This morning I’d like to visit with you about bees, once more.

Our two beekeepers, Sherry (Queen Bee) and her Mother Melva (Mama Bee), were back Saturday. I spent very little time with them as you all know Deb’s situation, and two of Deb’s sisters came down and stayed overnight with us, so we were fairly busy.

You know guys, I had put up a recipe not long back that was a Green Tomato Spice Cake. I haven’t tried this, but I think it would be really good. But, like Deb says…you call it food, Dub calls it good! Well, in that regard, what can I say, she’s right!

My Mama told me of a Green Tomato Pie, and she and my sister Marie, both said they’d tried one and it was absolutely delicious. So, I asked our readers if any had a recipe for this.

Well, I believe it was the next day, we had a reader that shared one with us. Beings I have a ton of green tomatoes at the moment, I’ll be trying me one before the week is out. Once I do, I’ll share my thoughts with you on this. I can’t wait!

“Sissy” and Hershey Kisses

Well, in starting this story of, my sister Marie, or “Sissy,” I have to tell you upon her seeing I’ve told this…she is gonna attempt murder, upon yours truly! The only thing I have going for me is the fact she lives in North Carolina, and Deb and I in Florida.

I’ve told of my days of growing up in Mississippi, and how I loved our time there as a child.

Well, Sissy was just BARELY beginning to toddle around a little when we first moved out there, and I’m not quite nine years older than her, and twelve years older than my brother, Shane. I’m figuring with this kind of age difference between me and Mom and Dad’s next child, I must have been a dern terror! Not me!

We stayed two years, so I’m guessing Sissy was about three when we left, and moved back to Florida.

Quickly, out in the front yard, off to the side was a big ditch, and when it rained heavily would carry quite a bit of water, but during dry times, it never had a hint of water in it.

Deb’s Update

Good morning guys, and I hope all are well.

Let’s start off this morning by saying once again, that all our prayers are with the victims of those terrible storms this past week. This was absolutely terrible, but actually this was the third or fourth round of bad weather that these poor people have faced this spring. Please keep them in your prayers!

Well, the second thing I’d like to share with everyone today is not good either.

Leonard’s Famous Steak Fingers, Carrot Pudding

Both these two recipes today, once again came from a cookbook Red’s daughter Shelby Lynn picked up for her Papa.

The title is “Camp Cooking 100 Years.” It is by The National Museum of Forest Service History. It can be purchased online at www.gibbs-smith.com

Dub has bragged on this book for the longest, and FINALLY, I got around to reading some of it, and I have to say that it is interesting. It has plenty of recipes, and is nformative on Dutch oven cooking.

If Inflation Were to Hit…Are You Ready?

Well, first Deb and I would like to say hello to all our friends, and welcome you guys back into Miz Judi’s Kitchen! We hope all are well, and life as a whole is going good for all of you. Thanks for stopping back in to visit with us again!

Right off the bat, I’d like to ask all to pray for the families who were lost or hurt in the last outbreak of severe weather! Many, many lost homes, or have homes that were damaged, so please, keep these poor people in your thoughts and prayers once more. Thanks guys!

You know this is a question Deb and I have asked ourselves a number of times. In regards to most things we probably could ride out some tough times that I believe may come to pass.
