I’ll let ya’ll in on a little secret this morning and it has to do with my age. I’m so old that I remember George Carlin’s, “The seven words you can never say on TV.” Although in today’s times it is condoned to say ALL SEVEN on TV! Boy, times have changed, huh?

Well, Deb and I now have come to realize the SIX LETTERS that no one wants to ever hear in regards to their family or friends, and these are simply C,A,N,C,E,R! Hopefully, down the road, none of us will ever have to hear those letters in that sequence again. Medical technology and our own (yours and ours) research together may in fact take this terrible disease right off the books! Can you say, “polio?”

With us fielding questions from readers in regards to Deb’s battle, and their own questions, due to curiosity of what we’re doing, and their own desire for more knowledge due to theirs or their families own fight in regards to cancer, I thought we’d share some of the things we’re doing.

With this being the case, this morning I’ll address some of those questions. Please understand that the alternative treatments we’re using I cannot tell you that they’ve worked in our regard, and may not, but they are our choice, I mean Deb’s choice. I say ours, only on account that WHATEVER Deb wants to do…I’m 100% behind her! BUT, we both BELIEVE they WILL work!

What we’re doing from a medical sense is controversial, and honestly I feel the Doctors think of these as “bunk.” But they are the treatments Deb decided upon. SO, don’t run out and just start these up…stop, look, research, and THEN, make up your own mind! Deb and I neither one are telling or asking you. Once more, these treatments are only what we’ve decided to do, and what we’re supplying you this morning . You have to do what your own heart tells you to do, okay?

April 28th. 2011, Deb and I sat in a Doctor’s office and were told that she has stage 4 breast cancer, which by the way had moved and they had found another tumor, this below her tracheal tube in her chest area. NO CURE…8-9 months no treatment, and 4-5 years, maybe, with treatment.

You want to talk total devastation…this was it. Never, ever, did we expect that type of diagnosis. Here we were, two ole “country folks” who had started doing a little column, thanks to Judi and Brian of the Canada Free Press. Those two allowed Deb and I to start sharing what little knowledge we had in regards to gardening, canning, recipes, food storage, and whatever else popped into our minds.

We called it Ridin Out the Recession…in Miz Judi’s Kitchen. Honestly, we were having the time of our lives, laughin, and jokin around with all you guys…it was great!! Then, in 5 minutes time we went from Ridin Out the Recession, to Ridin Out the DEPRESSION!!

But you know what? We spent hardly any time in a so called “depression.” A couple days later we were already becoming “pro-active,” instead of “reactive!” WE took control, not the cancer, or the depression associated with it.

Yes, we were upset, very much so, still are, but you know what? Deb and I both believe deeply, that if you’re knocked down you get right back up, “dust off the seat of your britches,” and move forward. NEVER, never, take no for an answer! You fight the good fight, and with the good Lord’s help…you end up being victorious, no matter what your endeavor, okay? STAY POSITIVE!

She has been such an inspiration to me! All jokes aside…she is “one tough cookie!” That dern heifer has taken 25 pounds of my big butt!

When we first were diagnosed, we put our situation in our column, and I have to tell you that we were overwhelmed by goodness, concern, prayers, and love, from…you guys! It was astounding your response, and thank you all again for such a testimony of human kindness…to two total strangers. You guys are great!

Now, what we do and have been doing.

The first thing we heard from other cancer survivors was juice…juice…and juice some more, and we haven’t quit yet! From right after we found out our plight we started juicing! We did then, and still do juice 20-25 fresh fruits and vegetables daily…EVERY DAY! It is a little costly, but hey, what’s your spouse mean to you?

I swear though, what a nutritional boost we get from this. This gives you practically all the “goodie” from each ingredient used. The juicer gives you the nutrition from the juice itself, the skin or peel, and even the small seeds in your fruits…they get ground up as well. Now it won’t grind up something as large and hard as a peach pit, for example, but I just make Deb swaller those! Just kiddin guys…I let her take a hammer and bust em up in two or three pieces!!
So to us, juice is very important, and is the second thing we do each day. The first…walk.

We walk a mile every morning, about half the time we take one around lunch, and each evening we’ll do another mile. We fluctuate our distances between a mile to a mile and a half, and some days two. For about the last month we tote dumbells while we walk.

Deb started out with 2 pounders in each hand and I with 10 pounders. We then moved Deb up to 5 pounders in each hand and me to 15 pounders. We just added leg weights in the last couple of days and she wears 2-1/2 pounders on each leg and I wear 5’s.

So, we get a pretty good workout with our walks and the dumbells and leg weights work you pretty good too. Then we bike a couple times a day. You add into this her house cleaning, cooking, helping out around the place, and she has quite a busy day! She looks and acts as if she were a picture of health. But once more…we BELIEVE we’re gonna whip this stuff! This is very important, and we can’t stress it enough…YOU HAVE TO BELIEVE!!

You know Deb decided against chemo after her first dose, and the immune boosting shot that follows it. She was sick, sick, and even more sick. NO positivity, no desire to get up and fight this mess, had terrible dizzy spells, and honestly…just looked like you know what. After about 10 to 15 days of this she told me…no more chemo!

After seeing her during the effects of chemo, and the non-positivity created from this, I was wondering to myself is this the right thing for Deb, but kept my mouth shut with these thoughts. We then had a get to the hospital now moment…go have cat scans as she may have blood clots on her lungs.

Once arriving we asked if this concern was caused from the cancer rearing its head, but were told quite frankly, “No, if we do find blood clots, it will be from the chemo.” Talk about an eye-opener.

The next morning we sat down and talked, and this is when Deb made me aware of her decision to forgo chemo, and concentrate on alternative treatments. I told her that I can’t promise these alternatives will work, and is she sure in her decision.

I’ll never forget her response. She told me that according to the Doctors, the chemo was a 50-50 chance, right? I replied that’s what I heard them say. She simply stated that if this was the case, then using alternatives, wouldn’t that be about 50-50 as well. I agreed.

She then stated that if this was the case, then she’d do the alternatives, and do without all the sickness, the loss of a good thought process, the ability to play with her grandchildren when she wanted, be ABLE to exercise as she should, and basically, to keep her quality of life as long as possible, or until we whip it! With that being said, we’re of the belief, wholeheartedly too, that we are indeed going to WHIP IT!

Treatment wise we started off with lemon, and this has continued since our finding out Deb had cancer in the first place. She drinks the juice from a fresh squeezed lemon daily. This is separate from our other juicing we do. We believe lemon to be a very big part of our process, and lemons supposedly are good in the fight against cancer.

She also takes the leftover lemon in the peel and rubs it on the two areas we know there are tumors, one on the breast, and the other over the tumor below her tracheal tube. By doing this, we are assuming this acid from the lemon is being drawn directly into the tumor.
We are on an alkaline diet for the last three weeks or better that was brought to our attention by JohnMinn. Thank you so much for all your info in this regard John! You’re the man!!

I can’t sit here and tell you guys that we keep strictly to an all alkaline diet because I’d be lying to you. I can say honestly that we do stay pretty tight to it about 80% of the time. One day a week we eat a full meal of our choice, the rest of the time we try to stay pretty focused on this diet. If you were a big meat and potato type of person…it’s kinda tough, but, it’s not too bad after the first week.

John and his brother both cured themselves of cancer using the alkaline diet. John had colon cancer, his brother lung cancer. Here’s an excerpt from one of John’s e-mails to us. We’ve put this up before, but for everyone’s benefit, we’ll share this again…

The answer is simple.


Cancer CAN NOT live in an alkaline medium.

There is also a very serious problem with the current techniques used for cancer. 
When my Doctor asked me if I was willing to take chemo, and I said “Hell NO!,  . . . Why do you think I want to commit suicide?”  He was just a bit more than unhappy with me.



There are a number of diets on the internet covering alkalizing your body.

What your wife needs is no more toxic foods and to cut way back on the foodstuffs that acidify the body.



In the Bible, the list of “DON’T EAT THESE” is rather simple.  Crabs, Crayfish, Lobster, Clams and skinned Fish were designed as garbage clean up specialists as were Buzzards, Eagles and Hogs.


Don’t eat toxic dumps such as hogs.



Good Proteins:  Eggs, Scaled and finned Fish, Chicken, Nuts such as almonds and English walnuts (not more than 15 almonds OR 10 walnut halves per day), Legumes and beans are all good and 3 OZ of beef per week max. as a treat if you “Just gotta have a burger”. 



LOTS of carrots and as many raw vegetables as you can stand.  Tomatoes are acid, but the body sees them as alkaline, and no I have not a clue as to why that is.
Fortunately I like Cauliflower and Broccoli raw, but when I tired of them raw I had them steamed. 


Try to stay away from frying as much as possible. 


Raw is best,

Steamed is next best,

Then boiled,

Then toasted

Then Broiled

Then Baked

Worst is Fried



I drank about 32 ounces of raw vegetable juice per day and of that the carrot juice was about 1/2 to 5/8ths.


My wife cans some of the best stewed tomatoes you ever tasted, and I used some of the stewed tomatoes as a “change of diet”.



AS LITTLE SUGAR AS POSSIBLE.  Cancer just loves sugar.  Yeah, I missed my ice cream and that fantastic chocolate cherry cake Ardy makes so bad that just thinking about it made me sweat.



NO SMOKING!



There is a LONG story about the magnets and my knee and Ardy’s ankle and the bee stings, but I’ll just summarize it this way.  My Dear friend Lew Lyon told me to use magnetic fields for my knee problem, and since the surgery on my dad’s knee was not much help I took Lews advice and tried the knee wrap and it worked so well I ordered the “brick” as part of my liver problem cure.  



I ended up seeing my friend and doctor about a serious problem I was having with a BM.


On Thursday they took a couple of samples of my colon tumor and I was scheduled for surgery on the next Wednesday.  The tumor HAD to be removed because it had closed my colon down to a marble size hole for waste to get through and when they got the cancer report they really put the rush on the surgery


In the meantime I was faithfully on my diet and I put the magnetic brick North Pole directly over the cancer.



They removed the tumor and 17.5 cm of colon because the doctor was so afraid of cancer and they sent the chunk of colon into the lab.  They could not find any cancer so they tested and tested and tested taking 26 site samples.  The surgeon about had a brick when that report came in while he and my friend and doctor (my daughter worked with him) were there as a post op checkup.  My Doctor friend said “Well!  You have just seen a miracle” the surgeon said “I don’t believe in miracles”  “That’s OK, you have just seen one.”  “Harrumph”.

Now, taking what John had to say as a great guideline, we found a site we both found informative in telling us all the alkaline foods and their benefits…

Maintaining a diet that promotes an alkaline pH within the body is good protection against cancer. When a person eats this kind of diet, the natural pH balance will lean more towards the alkaline side of the scale, instead of the acid level of the scale.

Unfortunately, all too often a person’s pH tends to be too acidic, making a good alkaline cancer treatment even more important. Many people believe that an alkaline pH can not only protect the body against cancer, but can even help to cure it once it has developed.

What is an Alkaline Diet?

Many people become confused in regards to alkaline and acid diets because they think that it refers to the actual pH level of the food itself. This is not the case, as some foods which are highly acidic in their natural form, such as lemons and limes, actually have an alkaline effect on the body. It would also make sense that if the body’s pH is acidic, then the growth of cancer cells and tumors would be encouraged. By eating mostly foods that make the body’s pH more alkaline, there would be less of a chance for cancer cells to develop and grow. So, by adjusting the diet, it is actually possible to create a less hospitable environment for cancer cells, thus improving a person’s chances of experiencing good health.

Other Alkaline Benefits

Cancer cells also do not grow well in the presence of oxygen. When oxygen levels are low, cancer cells have more of an opportunity to thrive and multiple. When body tissues have a high alkaline level, they are able to hold much more oxygen as compared to tissues with a high acid level. A high alkaline level within the body also makes it easier for cells to discard waste and toxins. As a result, tissues and cells within the body are more susceptible to damage and unhealthy conditions if the body’s pH is too acidic. By maintaining an alkaline pH, you’ll be helping to protect your body’s cells in addition to discouraging the development and growth of cancerous cells.

Tips for Maintaining an Alkaline Cancer Cure Diet

Although it’s not necessary to give up all meat and dairy products, you should definitely minimize your consumption of them. You can also counteract the acidic effects of certain foods by combining them properly with other foods. Most people find many benefits in a good alkaline cancer diet that is rich in fruit and other high alkaline foods.

One other treatment we are doing we started about a week ago. This we heard about from a very good friend, and he told us that this had cured several people around the Kissimmee-St. Cloud area down here. The kicker to this is that we know 3 or 4 of the people that used this and cured their cancer…no chemo, no radiation.

A quick story…
Mark, the friend who told us of this, has had melanoma cut off his body 3-4 different times, and had been scheduled to have another spot taken off. One of the people we know that are now cancer free applied a drop of this to Mark’s arm where they were going to cut the spot of him again.

Mark put two more drops on this spot. He told me that within 3 days the skin around this spot had a hole eaten around it. He said anotherthree or four days he scratched this spot because it was itching, and he said the spot, or core that was on his arm just fell out. Now the hole is just a tiny, tiny scar.

Mark, first of all is a straight shooter, and would never misstate something to Deb or I, much less involving something this serious. His wife and daughters are both nurses, and Mark said that his wife was ticked off with him for not bringing the core home. She then would have had it tested.

I asked this same question and he said honestly he was on a job site, and it amazed him when it did it, but he didn’t even think to have it checked. He also told me that I wouldn’t believe the number of people he knows who are now getting the “elixir” and using it as a preventative!

This “elixir” comes with three different types of treatments. The first is a foot soak, then it is taken internally by adding a few drops to a glass of milk, tea, water, anything basically, and it is used as a poultice. All different formulas for each type of treatment.

We have the number to contact these people, and they are out of Wyoming. They seem very knowledgeable, and are a big help with any questions, etc. Again, a few of the people that used this treatment and cured their cancers, we know.

Once more, we were only recently made aware of this product. If you’d like any info, or a contact number, just to talk with them, just give us a shout, we’d be happy to furnish you with their contacts.

We also are on one other alternative that is a 90-120 day program. Today we’ve been doing this one for exactly 60 days. This one, we’ll keep under our hat for now…it is pretty controversial.

If these things work out for us though, I promise you, Deb will be shouting all this out from the mountaintop…this is her main goal…sharing what helped her with others! I believe 100% she’ll get her wish in this regard!!

So in closing, we are not trying to influence anyone in what or how to conduct their own fight against cancer. People had been inquisitive about what we were doing and this was pretty much telling our story of what we do.

If you have this disease, first off God Bless you and yours. Secondly, you do what feels right in your own heart, no matter what the treatment. It is YOUR decision. Deb has had complete “free reigns” in her decision making…this is the only way, for us anyway.

Lastly, Deb and I both feel that one of your main weapons is your own body…mind over matter. You can’t win if you don’t believe! Positivity…never lose it!

“Evolution” Pt. 2

MARTIN LUTHER KING………the enduring American history produced great men who matched the moment. A voluntary 18th century British colony gave birth to the greatest political thinkers ever. Jefferson, Adams, Madison, Franklin, Hamilton, Washington, Jay. …..the crises of the 20th century bring forth Lincoln, the 20th century and FDR. Equally miraculous is Martin Luther King Jar, Black America’s righteous revolt against a century of p0st-emancipation oppression could of gone in many bitter destructive directions, it did not. This was largely the work of one man’s leadership, moral imagination and strategic genius. The result was not just racial liberation, but national redemption…..such a life deserves a monument alongside other miracles of our history—Lincoln, Jefferson and FDR, where his statue precisely stands……It opened this past Monday on the Tidal Basin, adjacent to Roosevelt’s seven acres, directly across from Jefferson’s temple, and bisecting the invisible able line connecting the line connecting the memorials for Jefferson and Lincoln. King now takes his place as the only non-president to be so honored. As of August 22, 2911 there is no room for any additional memorials on the shores of the Tidal Basin.

AMERICA’S INVESTMENT IN NATO, IS IT WORTH IT…..we are now in the fifth month of the Libyan intervention, that President Obama’s administration said would involve “days not weeks”, an undertaking about which Prime Minister Cameron and French President Sarkozy’s sudden zest for waging humanitarian war., under the umbrella of NATO. Before its objective, was became regime change, the point was to prevent Gadhafi from inflicting humanitarian disaster. Of course oil had no consideration in deciding to act, and where was the United States when the French and British decided to come to the aid of the mass of the anti Gaddafi Libyans and the USA warships just happened to be nearby, and flew many “sorties”, killing only Gaddafi “beasts”.

Once Gaddafi is gone, while other nations will now be coming out of the woodwork, to police Libya’s post war chaos, which there surely will be, but can any one answer the question, “did NATO’s operations actually those of a minority of NATO nations, really serve the humanizing objective of economizing the violence in Libya……and we , Americans, can decide whether this was a sensible by a British government whose austerity program, announced BEFORE the Libya affair, that Britain was reducing their army by 30%, decommissioning their only aircraft carrier

The United States has over 39,000 active troops under the command of NATO, originally organized to be part of the resistance of a Russian expansion during the Cold War, and a determinant to any Russian ideas of enlarging their position in Europe, that is long gone and it’s time for the USA to stop being a policeman for European countries. We have lost enough of our Armed Forces, and we are no longer the POWER OF THE WORLD, and in this global world, we had better make sure that our homeland is safe, and have the time and energy to rise to where we not so long ago……..Searching for new energies, climate control and other social changes will not happen with a weakened United States. America’s military requires the ability to respond forcefully and effectively, and relies on Congress and the President to provide the necessary resources.

A DAY TO REMEMBER…..on September 2, 1945, 66 years ago, Japan surrendered to General MacArthur on the deck of the deck of the USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay……very few Americans in 1945, and fewer today, know about the elaborate plans that were created for the invasion of Japan, labeled as “Operation Downfall” consisted of two points of the invasion. More than 1.5 million combat soldiers with millions more in support. Would have been directly involved in these two amphibian assaults. Some 4.5 million American service men, more than 40% of all service-men still in uniform in 1945. Were to part of “Operation Downfall”

The Naval forces consisted of two AWESOME fleets, third and fifth……The Third was under the command of Adm. “Bull” Halsey and the Fifth under Adm. Spruance, it would consist of over 3,000 ships of various sizes.

The invasion never happened, President Truman authorized two atomic bomb s…one on Hiroshima on August 6th and on August 9th, and the second bomb was dropped on Nagasaki. This decision probably saved the lives of over 1 Million American causalities; the Japanese surrender on August 15th avoided innumerable Japanese lives and property.

CHARLES KRAUTHAMMER on OBAMA’S VACATION……” I think his problem is not the choice of time, the length of vacation; it’s the choice of place. Everyone understands the president, like any chief executive, has to have time off, they would not begrudge him…..but choosing an exclusive enclave like the Vineyard, after spending three days on the road rolling against the rich, and the wealthy and the millionaires and billionaires and the corporate jet owners who Vacation exactly the same place and then spending 10 days in their company, speaks of a kind of dissonance or hypocrisy. You know, the Vineyard doesn’t have any bridges to it, you either have to get on the ferry, or in your Maserati, or on a jet or helicopter. It’s not exactly where ordinary folks will take a vacation……”

IS AMERICA LOSING its RECOVERY CONFIDENCE? The CBO has again warned policy-makers of the urgent need to get Washington’s fiscal house in order, in its 2001 report this is the third straight year that our deficits will be in excess of $1 Trillion dollars. This report confirms again the reckless over spending has not produced the economic growth or the jobs that the President promised and that American families need. Perhaps the administration needs less “economists” and more successful business oriented advisors.

Obama tried that when he appointed GE Chairman Jeff Immelt to head his commission on job creation (another Czar) who was supposed to help create jobs…… I think there must have been a miss-understanding between Obama and Immelt. As the news reports, GE is planning to move its 115 year old X-Ray division to Beijing, China. In addition to moving the headquarters, the company will invest $2 billion in China, and train more than 65 engineers and create six research centers.

This is the same GE that made $5 billion in the U.S. last year but paid NO TAXES- the same company that employs more people overseas than it does in the United States……..I guess the President “forgot” to tell him which country he was to increase the much needed JOBS !!!!!!!

The President just appointed Alan Krueger, Princeton University, as Chairman of the White House Council of Economic Advisers. Mr Krueger comes with high recommendations, like those who previously held that post, Mr. Golsbee and (giggles) Christina Romer, both from the University of California (hope he doesn’t agree with Romer that the “stimulus plan” was too small to be successful……

Gave Our Canned Butter A Try Today:

If you guys remember back in March, Deb and I tried our hands at canning butter. We canned 12 pints to see how it turned out, to see if it had good taste after being canned, and how the butter keeps on a shelf in the pantry.

Well, it’s been almost six months now, and we decided today to take a pint out, and see how it’s doing. On a scale of one to ten, I’d have to give it a fourteen. Basically it scores so high because I made it…and I scored it! You see, it ain’t what you know…it’s WHO you know!

Actually though, I am very impressed. It seems to store very well, the color and texture are holding up fine (it is really pretty canned in the jars), and I and Deb both thought the taste was very good. I promise you all, we’ll be canning more of this.

One reason we decided to try canning butter was the ability to keep butter on hand that didn’t have the need for refrigeration. This plus the fact butter takes up freezer space that could be used for other things…mainly meat and vegetables.

We see now that without a doubt, you can put butter up in this way, and the taste is just fine. Hey Mississippi…got you a picture of spreading it on toast like you requested…except you requested on a biscuit, but we forgot and used toast! Sorry…

Power goes out…no problem, because your butter is sitting on a shelf…at room temperature. Deb and I both feel that the more ways you can utilize storage that can get by with no electricity, the better off we are.

Some people prefer freezing versus canning, and honestly I’m not sure there is such a thing as one really being better than the other. Although we feel canning is more our way of putting up our food supplies, at least as much as we can anyway.

Once again, we feel this way mainly from a “no power” standpoint, plus we enjoy the taste of canned food. In all actuality, if we were without power for any extended period of time, then we’d probably can most of the meat we’d have in our freezer anyway. It ends up being your own personal preference.

The butter as an example, is a product many people say you cannot can safely. BUT, if you don’t make sure that what you’re canning isn’t done properly, ANYTHING can spoil, or go bad.

Some reasons why, may be jars not sealing, not wiping lids free of film while filling jars, not canned at the proper pressure, or not cooked long enough. These are but a few examples. So, the most important thing in canning is simply doing it right, the first time.

Now corn, Deb and I don’t can this. We cream our corn from the garden and freeze it. This is probably the one vegetable we do freeze, plus it takes a long time to can, and cream corn is our preferred style of eating it, unless right off the cob.

Any corn storage to speak of that we have is regular store bought corn, but we have just about any vegetable under the sun that’s store bought and stored as well.

We’ve canned stews, soups, beef, pork and chicken, fruits, and vegetables. We just made a chicken salad the other night. We used a pint jar of chicken we’d canned…in 2008! Delicious!

Also a buddy of ours took home some stew and some canned chicken. He called a few days later and said his wife made up a pot of rice and some cornbread, heated up the canned stew and served it over the rice. The chicken they made chicken salad as well, and he said both the stew and the chicken were great. Their dates…2008 as well.

The home canned products last very, very well, and again, Deb and I both are firm believers in canning. We also enjoy the time together we spend doing these things. To us, it is simply a part of our lifestyle, and keeps us in good, fresh, homegrown food products. Life is good…

Now, one thing do in regards to freezing, besides the normal things such as meat, is to cook some meals using the, what I like to call, “the overkill method!” This being just cooking more at one time that we could ever possibly eat. The remaining leftover food, we simply food saver and freeze for a later time.

This, just like canning is really a time saver for quick, easy, nutritious meals. Meatloaf, ham, stuffed peppers, barbequed chicken, lasagna, macaroni and cheese, chili, beans, etc. Take these jewels out at a later date, thaw, heat, and…it’s suppertime!

For heavy prep meals such as lasagna and stuffed peppers, this method works really well with. This being because with one prep time, one baking time, and one CLEANUP, you may enjoy meals that you really like, and having them possibly 3-4 more times off one cook. Again, with only one prep, bake, and cleanup. How easy is that?

So, as I said earlier, we were very, very pleased with how the butter turned out. Phew…I was sweatin this one out, as honestly, I wasn’t sure of the end result. Now, after almost 6 months, I can see clearly that this method of food storage WILL work, and work well!

EVOLUTION………SEPTEMBER 1, 2011

You know, I’ve told you guys about AP, once again…he’s in his nineties, and what a great bunch of people he and his family are. I’ve also mentioned AP’s concern over the goings on in our Country today, and with this being the case AP started throwing his two-cents out there in his own bid to try an educate as many people as he possibly could.

When he first started out with his political writings it was during the campaign and post-election of our sitting President. He saw the associations kept by our President, and the ideology of his political agenda. Thus, he titled his first writings, and it stuck…”The Revolution.”
Since the takeover of our Congress by a Republican majority, and the closing of the gap in the Senate, and seeing the growth and popularity of the Tea Party, AP saw a swing in the attitude of the American people.

Southern Living: Grilled and Fried Chicken

Good morning to all, and we hope you all have a great Labor Day!

The first recipe today is from my Mother, “ Ruthie.” We’ve posted it before, but we decided to do it once again, and have a little fun with it by doing a video, “You’d have to be a rooster…to get a better piece of chicken!”

We also did this to show everyone that Deb is doing just fine. So many have put her in their thoughts and prayers that we felt it would do everyone good to see that yes, Deb is doing fine so far. We’re going to whip this stuff through alternative treatments…Good Lord willing. Thank you all so much, because you’ve all been a great source of inspiration to Deb and I both!

An Addition On To The Food Storage Room

Deb and I were sitting outside talking the other day, last weekend to be exact, and she mentioned possibly adding on to the food storage room. It won’t be for food storage per say, but actually more room for other things as well.

First off, we try to keep some motor oils, and some tube grease put up. We started off keeping this in our original room, but the produce from our gardens quickly prevented us continuing to keep our oil in there too…not enough room.

So, these products had to go back out to our tool shed, which is fine but for one thing…the heat. Our tube grease literally melts down from time to time during the summer months as it’s a metal shed with only a fan to stir the air. Tire repair kits, such as patches, plugs, etc., can’t take the heat either, so her idea for an addition actually sounded good to me as well, so, we’ve gotten it started.

Her reasoning for the additional room is for more space freed up in our food storage for us to continue to can, and put up more of our vegetables, number one, plus she’d like a place to put her extra cast iron cookware. Along with this, she can put up her extra cleaning supplies, paper towels, TP, aluminum foil, medicines, our lanterns and their rebuild kits, etc.

It’s kinda’ like the old sayin’…it doesn’t matter how large you build a barn…you always wished you’d have built it a little bigger. You turn around good, and the dern thing is full! This sure describes our situation here at our place.

MY main two reasons for going ahead and building it are both very simple, BUT both are very good reasons as you’ll soon see…

First, it’ll make Deb happy, which makes my life SO much easier! The second reason is that it’ll make Deb happy, AND this makes my life so much easier! How simple is that guys?? Mama’s happy…EVERYONE is happy!

We are extending the room by an additional 12’x10’. This added on to the original, and it being a 12’x12’. This makes it a 22’x12’, and honestly I don’t know why I didn’t make it that size to begin with? Actually I do, and it’s called…a shortage of Benjamin Franklin’s!

To that statement Deb only stated that our President claims you can SPEND your way out of debt, and I explained to her that no, in reality that doesn’t happen, you cannot spend your way out of debt, but only spend your way into complete bankruptcy. She said that, “YOU CAN, if you print your own money,” but I had to tell her that no, this doesn’t even work, but only prolongs the pain.

Her remark? “Are YOU the President of the United States? So the addition is being built…any of you guys mind redistributing some of YOUR wealth down towards Central Florida way? If so, please just send cash.

One thing we are doing with the addition is build it exactly as we built the first room. 2×6 studs as are our floor and ceiling joists. This enables us to double insulate the floors, walls and ceiling. We use 2” fiberboard insulation, then come behind that with an R-19 rated rollout insulation. Plywood walls, pressure treated on the outside and interior grade on the inside.

By doing this in our original room, it worked absolutely great. Even during the very hottest days, the little 110 air conditioner holds 68 degrees and runs very, very little. It works great!

The additional cost to us during the hottest times…about 25 bucks a month. Money well spent.
That’s what Gus told Jake about Laurie in Lonesome Dove wasn’t it? “Money well spent…both times!

This same 110 unit will keep the additional room cooled as well, but we will install another small 110 unit as a backup…you never know.

We should have it built in another 2-3 days, lights and all. We cut in for a door, but decided after we cut and framed the door space out, that no, we’ll not add another door, but simply use the door on the original room, and cut out a walkway to pass through into the new room. Then we have only one door, period.

By having the door hole cut though, it sure helped out by allowing us some light where we could see well while working inside the room. Once we run the power we’ll frame out the door space, close it back in, then plywood and insulate it and that’ll finish us up…all but moving around what ole’ Deb wants moved around. That’ll be an experience by itself.

Hmmm…I might be gone somewhere that day, and let Dale and Bob handle it. I can see it now, Deb pointing that finger and saying, “Just put it right here…no, no, I think it’ll be better if we move it here…no, I like it where it WAS at to begin with.”

I’ve been around her too long, and know her like a book! I have complete faith that Dale and Bob can handle it though. If I had any doubts at all that they couldn’t, I’d be right there with them. Hahaha! You believe that, right?

Basically Deb and I do believe our economy will continue to get tougher. Food storage is one way that we feel may be a help to us down the road.

As grocery prices continue to rise, gas prices…who knows where they may get to, the inability evidently by our government to come to grips with excessive, to put it very mildly, spending, and our un-employment rate as high as it is, all point to tougher times down the road.

We’ve seen flooding in some areas, drought in others, and who knows how much effect these things will have on food production in the near future? It may behoove us all to think along these same lines…a little extra can’t hurt, huh?

We find canning our preference in the storage of vegetables, fruits, stews, soups, and meats, although we also freeze all these as well. With these two rooms to help us out with storage space, it also allows us to keep a pretty good stock of food in a spot that if power is lost, then we can still keep it safe even with a small generator.

In 2004, we were hit by three hurricanes in about a month’s time. All three eyes of these storms were very close to us, and when power was lost for over a week after the first storm, we lost all the food in our freezers…no generator.

By canning so much of our food, this helps to insure this not taking place again. Not only this, but canning makes meals so very simple, if you’ve had a long day. Put on a pot of rice, heat up a jar or two of stew, throw some cornbread in the oven, and very quickly, you’re eating a good hot meal…and no refrigeration needed. It works well for us anyway…

Also, if you haven’t invested in a food saver system, then why don’t you at least check them out, and see what benefits they offer that might just be, “the ticket,” in regards to your own family needs?

Cheyenne “on patrol.” She was barking to beat the band the other night and Deb and I got outside just in time to see a coyote outside the fence taking off. They’re really becoming established here now. This is bad news for the turkey and baby deer.

Yes, Our Chickens HAVE Come Home To Roost

Good morning guys. We haven’t posted in a few days, but honestly we’ve been awful busy. Plus, Thursday we have a big, big appointment…a blood test for Deb. This will be her first since deciding she’ll be no longer doing chemo.

Anyway…

You know, during the campaign we heard on numerous occasions Rev. Wright proclaiming, “God d… America,” and other America hating, racist, along with many other things I found absolutely atrocious.

Our Starter Hive

Let me just start off by saying we wish all well in Irene’s path and hope any damage sustained is very minimal. You guys are in our thoughts and prayers!

You know that we have two beekeepers, Sherry and Melva, that brought out a number of hives this past spring. To begin with they brought out in the neighborhood of 60 hives, and have since cut it back to about 20. This is because they follow the crops fixing to bloom, and move their hives accordingly.

The first bloom the bees caught was the orange blossoms, followed by the palmetto bloom, and then the cabbage palm bloom. These are now just about finished up. The next move is to go to the Brazilian peppers.
