Getting the Garden Ready, and Some Decisions Made on the Greenhouse

Good morning guys, and welcome back! C’mon in, grab a chair and let’s shoot the bull for a while!

Man, it’s been windy here the last couple days, and it’s sure dryin things out…in a hurry! We’ve got a 30% chance of rain today, but maybe we’ll catch some. We could use it, but it doesn’t look promising.

Our garden finally got the last bit of cow manure yesterday. While Corey and Elmo were haulin poop (they tell me they sure take a lot of crap off this job), I was grindin oak leaves and getting them in piles to spread over the manure. We’ll then spread 2 to 3 bales of hay over this, and then till it all into the existing soil.

I’ve got until Feb. 8th, to have our broccoli and cabbage set out again, the first sets were JUST beginning to produce and BAM, 24 degrees one night, followed by a 27 the following night. Knocked those suckers for a loop, so we gave em to the cows.

We’ll now replant them, probably a row of each, then we’ll split a row of cauliflower and lettuce. Our rows are hundred footers. We have to have the lettuce and cauliflower in by the 7th. We always plant by the almanac, and these dates are moon favorable.

Beef Tenderloin with Blue Cheese Topping, Marinated Broccoli, Cauliflower and Tomatoes, and Strawberry Stuffed Strawberries

Good morning guys, and how the heck are ya’ll today? We’re back again in ole Miz Judi’s Kitchen, and dern, we got a pretty good feedbag we’ll be sharin with you!

Once again, I can’t get started without bragging on our weather down here in…the “Sunshine State!” I’ve been out sippin coffee in my drawers and T-shirt on the porch, and ole Cheyenne sittin right beside me in Deb’s chair.

Where’s Deb? Why that “heifer’s” still in bed this morning. “Ole shiny girl” (Cheyenne) and I get up early and share our quiet time together…kinda like the calm before the storm. We both KNOW that once “our leader” awakens…it’s petal to the metal, at least in our regards.

It seems that Deb doesn’t have an “idle gear” in her system, or vocabulary, and especially when it comes to me. Once she hits the door she’s pointin her finger and designatin chores for Cheyenne and I…do this, do that, all followed by, “Yes Ma’am, Yes Ma’am,” and poor ole Shiny Girl lookin up at me with a, how long you gonna keep toleratin this look on her face??

Anyway, if any of you menfolk out there have suggestions in how to break this “I’m the boss attitude” projected by our “better halves,” please, PLEASE, drop us a line…as long as it don’t get me killed! LOL!

Milanese Chicken, and Gypsy Pie

Good morning guys, and welcome back to Miz Judi’s Kitchen once again! We sure hope everyone is doin fine, and I’m not sure about elsewhere, but our weather down here has been exceptional. Highs in the mid-seventies to near 80, and absolutely gorgeous. Deb and I both are proud to be able to say, “We’re native Floridians!” Ain’t a whole lot of us left.

Well, we’ve been busy prepping our garden spot. We’ve taken everything out, fed it to the cows, and during this time of the year they’re very glad for the “green” vegetables. The reasoning is there is literally no, to very little nutrition in the pasture. During this time we supplement nutrition through minerals and protein blocks, and of course hay.

But, we enjoy watching the cows eat these fresh vegetables, and they really do “dig in” when we start putting them out. In return, we’re provided with manure that we then apply into the garden, and if we see one “slackin off” in regards to keepin us in a steady flow of this essential waste product, I’ll ride by and shake a bag of charcoal in front of em.

A Tip of My Hat to Tim Thomas…

Good morning guys, how is everybody today?

As today’s title suggest, I would like to “tip my hat,” to Tim Thomas, a goaltender and the MVP of the series for Boston Bruins, who won the 2011 Stanley Cup Finals. Am I a hockey fan? I wasn’t, but am now, at least for the time being.

Living in Florida, I’ve just never followed ice hockey even though Tampa has a team. Hockey just never seemed to interest me, and don’t ask me why. Mainly I believe because as kids, Lake Kissimmee never froze over allowing us to ice skate. LOL! So with no applied knowledge of the game, I never “got into” it!

Tim Thomas did something that inspired me number one, and by doing so, he became not only an inspiration, but a role model. Not the type where I feel through his play he became a “hero,” or “folk legend,” as a Mickey Mantle, Roger Maris, Bart Starr, Tom Brady, Willie Mays, etc., but by simply standing up for his beliefs. Believing in the difference between…right and wrong! Thank you SO much, Mr. Thomas! To me, you ARE, a great American!

I read about Mr. Thomas in my latest issue of “Sports Illustrated,” and although I had missed his “stand” earlier, I was enlightened by reading this short commentary.

REVOLUTION……January 31, 2012

Once again, I give you my good buddy AP and his take on the political agendas going on in our Country. AP is in his nineties, and a World War II vet, a successful businessman, a father, and grandfather, and in my opinion…a great American.

And now…this edition of… “Revolution…”

“In general, the art of government consists of taking as much money as possible from one group of citizens to give to the other”…Voltaire (1764)

THE ANTI-JOBS PRESIDENT…Obama rejects Keystone XL pipeline, and blames Congress…The central conflict of the Obama Presidency has been between the jobs and growth crises he inherited and the President’s hell-for-leather pursuit of his larger social-policy ambitions. The tragedy is that the economic recovery is caught in between, with the second impulse keeps winning. Yesterday came proof positive with the White House’s repudiation of the Keystone XL pipe line, Trans Canada’s $7 billion shovel ready project that would support tens of thousands of jobs if only it could get the requisite U.S. permits. THESE JOBS, APPARENTLY CAN WAIT.

Roasted Tarragon Chicken, Creamy Succotash, and Cornbread Stuffing with Sausage and Apple:

Good morning guys, and welcome back to Miz Judi’s Kitchen this morning, with Dub and Deb. We’re hoping all is well, and ya’ll are in the midst of a great weekend. We got about ½ inch of rain Friday. It wasn’t quite what I’d of liked to seen, BUT, its rain and we’ll take it!

To be honest though, we’d been really dry, and it’s amazing the difference in everything after a shower. Even the grass in the pastures, are showing some green amidst all the brown.

The amount of pollen that was washed into the drive was an eye-opener, and the dern stuff has been the cause of some discomfort to Deb and I for the past few weeks. Itchy, runny noses, and swollen eyes from time to time. My ole eyes would water and get red, and I know half the people in town were probably thinkin Deb had been slappin me around some…AGAIN!

Well, there’s been some changes in our garden in the last week. We took out everything we had growin for the time being and fed it to the cows…broccoli, cabbage, mustard, and collard greens. The cold snap we had a couple weeks back knocked the broccoli for a loop. It was just beginning to get right too!

We did get three good messes off it, but it had been hurt bad enough it wasn’t doin anywhere near like it should’ve. The same with the cabbage. Although it wasn’t hurt quite as bad as the broccoli, but, it too wasn’t performing for us properly, SO, it came out as well.

Some of Our Friends From Far and Wide…

Good morning guys, how’s it going today? Welcome back to Ridin Out the Recession, in Miz Judi’s Kitchen…

Well, we get back on topic today as yesterday I’d ranted a little over the excessive spending and totally irresponsible behavior of our politicians…appreciate your patience!

You know, Deb and I have had a lot of fun with this, but we’ve met some of the most wonderful people. It’s amazing the amount of love and concern shown by others to us, but actually towards most folks in general. There IS still an awful lot of goodness in people’s hearts and you don’t have to look far to see this.

We’ve met and mingled with people, in all honesty worldwide, and this has been a great experience for us. It’s opened our eyes to how different people in different areas conduct their day to day lives, whether it be showing us the different types of work they do, the food they eat and how it’s prepared, how they garden, and the tips they have to share regarding all the above.

Today we’ll share a few videos of some of our friends and what they share with everyone. It’s amazing. We’ll wander around a little bit and show a few different topics altogether, and we get a kick outta all of them.

Honestly, when you watch a video, you ought to check out their channels, as we believe you’ll enjoy them. A lot of good, good info out there and we love it!

We get a weekly update from YouTube of videos that our buddies have uploaded. Most times watchin these are just a hoot!

Dad-Gummit…What’s Happening to Our Country?

Good morning guys…how are ya’ll today? I tell you guys the dern weather has been absolutely beautiful down here. Mid 80’s yesterday and today will be close to the same. We have a front comin in the morning with a 70% chance of some MUCH NEEDED rain. C’mon rain! THEN, the temperatures are droppin again…to the low 70’s! LOL!

I try to stay away from very many political statements by Deb or myself in our writings, at least on this site. The exception being our ole buddy AP, who brings us the “Revolution.” We try to mainly stay on a gardening, recipe, prepping nature, but sometimes I just have to, as Deb describes it…opening my BIG mouth! Well, today is one of those occasions!

Anyway, I know all of ya’ll are like Deb and myself watching these food prices increasing. I’m getting sticker shock any more at the way food pricing has increased. Isn’t it amazing what they’ve done the past couple years?

Unemployment is still high, yet the cost to only subsist anymore continues an upward spiral. For those who haven’t, you guys might just wanna wake-up to the goings on today of our politicians. Just out of curiosity, how many vacations HAS our President taken? They sure seem to be tightening their belts in DC, huh?

I have to believe the way these people, our elected leaders are acting, they’re probably LOOSENING their belts instead of tightening them. You eat, sleep, breathe, and live on an unlimited money pit to draw from, created by we the taxpayer, you’ll soon see your britches might be goin up a size or two.

The problem we as taxpayers have is our leaders don’t seem to come to grips that OUR incomes have taken a hit, and by so, the bottomless pit they draw from is fast becoming a very LIMITED bottomless pit. We cannot sustain their fiscal recklessness! Do the math, it’s pretty elementary, even to a “dumb ole redneck” like yours truly!

We Got the Top on Our Greenhouse

Good morning guys, and come on in a while. We hope all are well this morning and everything is good in regards to your daily activities.

Well, we worked on the greenhouse again yesterday, and little by little we keep inching closer to getting the outside buttoned up.

We got the two layers of plastic pulled on the roof, and the fan installed to keep the two layers blown up…basically the roof is like a big balloon. This is to help in insulating the building. We used a clear plastic underneath and then used a white plastic on top. This is to help knock down the sun’s rays, and keep it from getting so hot.

The white plastic cuts down the sun by 50%. We also are installing shade cloth on the inside of the side curtains as well. This too will knock down the sunlight too, plus it’ll help keep out bugs when the curtains are rolled up. Also it will help to knock the breeze down some when heavy winds are blowing. It doesn’t stop it, but it will help to.

We have a good friend, Bobby, who has some greenhouses in Virginia, and his statement to me was simply that we won’t have to worry about keeping it heated down here as much as we’ll need help with…the heat of the summer.

Sausage Pinwheels, Quick Pimiento Cheese Snacks, and Shrimp Spread:

Hey guys! How’s everybody been? Welcome back to Miss Judi’s Kitchen, and why don’t you guys come on in and sit a while with us this morning?

I tell ya’ll, Deb and I have been busier than a one-legged man…ah, forget it! We HAVE been busy though! We’re still pretty busy for the next month or so, but not like the past 3-4 weeks have been! Phew!

You know we had Deb’s cookout this past Saturday, right? I gotta tell you guys that it turned out great! She really, really had a very nice get together, and there was pushing about 100 people…they just kept comin in. It was amazing!

I was in awe of the outpouring of love in her regard, and everyone was just great. It was one of, if not THE, most enjoyable gatherin I’ve ever been associated with.

Ole Cuz Vince, who did all the cooking, told me afterwards that his crew commented several times as to what a nice group of people were in attendance, and they were! Honestly, it was awesome, and I was so proud of how well it went for Deb! Thanks guys!
