Robbie… “Got any More of Them Peas, Dub?”

Good morning to all our friends and neighbors! Deb and I would like to welcome you guys back to Ridin Out the Recession in Miz Judi’s Kitchen! Thanks for coming back in to see us this morning, and if you haven’t visited with us before today…shame on ya!

No, actually if this is your initial visit, Deb and I would like to extend a cordial welcome to you guys as well! We hope you like what you find, and will come back to see us again!

Spring is in the air people, and doesn’t it feel good. We were looking at our yard and pastures this past weekend, and boy, they’re really starting to green up. Here in the next week or two, we’ll give the pastures a good shot of fertilizer, and the cows will be happy campers.
Ingram Grove Care, out of Winter Haven, fertilize them for us, and take care of about a hundred acres of grove for a good friend of ours. We kinda oversee his groves for him, and Robbie Ingram, Bud’s son, is who we deal with.

Robbie… “Got any More of Them Peas, Dub?”

Robbie’s one great guy, and I honestly don’t know if he’s capable of getting mad or not. He’s sure had an excuse with me a time or two, but it just seems you can’t fluster him, or maybe I’m not going about it right? That’s a problem I’ve never had before, imagine that!

Robbie always brings us a piece of deermeat, fish, or something pretty regular. You look up from time to time, and there’s his truck coming down the drive. He’ll get out and go, “Hey Dub, what’s going on?”

I know what he’s up to, but he’ll start telling me the place is looking pretty, have you lost some weight, Dub (that’s one of his favorites), or, I was just coming back from the huntin camp, you guys want some meat?

Shoot, Deb and I got him figured out though. As soon as we see him coming down the drive, Deb goes, “Ya better lock the canning room Dub, he’s after some more of them peas!”

I ask her, “You don’t want to let him have any peas today?” She’ll tell me, “No, he got right at 10 quarts last time he come!” Me being the obedient servant I am, just say okay, and I won’t offer him any today! Deb will say, “Good!”

So, I’m getting my mindset right to tell him we’re getting low or some other lie, as my little wifey’s forcing me to tell, me hating to act this way towards ole Robbie, but once more, I’ve learned ya don’t wanna make Momma mad at ya!

So, Robbie and I’ll chew the fat for a minute or two, and ole Deb will walk outside, probably just to make sure I ain’t passing out no peas, after she’s told me not to! You men know exactly where I’m coming from, I’m sure!

Then ole Robbie will say, “Dub you still have any of them peas left,” and I’ll say no Robbie, we’re going to have to hurry up and get the garden going again, cause we’re down to just a few jars, and Deb wants us to keep them for family dinners.” Man, I hating lying to the man, I mean he’s really a great guy!

Robbie then will say, “Mrs. Bronson,” not Deb, but “Mrs. Bronson, you sure look pretty today! Have you changed the way you’re wearin your hair? I can’t put my finger on it, but boy, your hair really looks nice!”

That scoundrel, I know what he’s doing!

Deb then says, “Now Dub, you know that ain’t very neighborly of you to not give Robbie some of them peas! Shoot, it’s not like we don’t have any! Now, you go on and get Robbie some peas to take to his family! You surprise me sometimes!”

I surprise her sometimes?? I tell you guys, I’ve been around women ALL my life, but I swear, I’ll never figure them out, and oughta quit trying to! I surprise her sometimes? The whole time, Robbie just a standing there grinning like a possum eatin s…! I’ll get him!

Get him some peas to take to his family! Shoot, she don’t know near as much about Robbie as she thinks she does!

Robbie’s family don’t see none of them peas, or if they do, it’s very few of em!

I seen ole Jerry, who works with Robbie, at Lowes the other day! We were standing their just talking, when Jerry tells me that he had seen Robbie’s wife Heidi, last week at the shop! He said they were just talking, when Jerry said, right outta the blue, Heidi went to talking about me.
Jerry said that was really unusual too, because Heidi has never talked about anyone before, according to him.

Well shoot, I was wondering what she’d said, but Jerry told me not to worry about it, it wasn’t any big deal. Well, who wants to hear such nonsense as that, when you’ve just been told someone was talking about you?

Reluctantly, Jerry agreed to tell me that Heidi had said that Dub, was a dern cheapskate! Jerry said he asked her why and she replied, “Well, you know they grow a garden every year, and can up a bunch a vegetables!”

To which Jerry said he replied, “Yes Heidi, I know they do, what about it?”

He said she stated, “Well, that dern cheapskate Dub, sends us home jars that have already been opened, and eaten out of! Him and Deb eat what they want out of them, then send half full jars home by Robbie, to give to us! We love them peas, sure, but I just think that’s not right! I just couldn’t do somebody that way!”

Jerry told me he was gonna tell Heidi that Robbie keeps them peas stored in his office, and heats up some everyday! Then he’ll eat about half a jar for lunch, and THEN take the remainder of the jar home to Heidi and the kids!

No wonder Heidi’s mad at Debbie and me! Heck, a half a quart a pea’s don’t go far feedin four people!

I’ll get you Robbie, and you oughta be ashamed of yourself!

Seriously, Robbie and his family are great people, and I decided I’d have a little fun this morning at their expense! Jerry did finally own up and tell me he’d fudged a little bit in his tale on Robbie. He said, honestly Dub, when Robbie leaves the office, he has at least ¾ of a jar of peas, not just a ½!

Robbie does love peas though, and we don’t mind sending them some home at all… we’re outta lobster, Robbie! Thought I’d give you a little heads up.

He’s also tried some of our stew and soups, and canned chicken. He says he really likes them as well, but not sure if he’s just saying that…to get at more peas!

In all honesty though, we really enjoy everything we’ve canned. Time well spent, and more than worth the effort of doing so!
Thank you all for coming back to see us again! God Bless every one of you, and see you next time!

Dub out!
